“Life is more fun if you play games.”
― Roald Dahl, My Uncle Oswald
My friend got me thinking after I saw her Facebook status…
“Last night I spent 15 minutes in my basement waving my arms trying to tag Ethan while he tried to get past me to touch the wall. It was the dumbest, nonsensical, made up game ever but he later said it was “so, so much fun, mom”. Maybe such a silly activity isn’t pinterest or blog worthy but he’s been asking to play again. It’s awesome that just time + nonsense= a satisfied child & happy mom!”
I have to agree with her, except for one point about it not being blog worthy! It totally is!
There are a whole bunch of great toys and games out there for kids, but the most fun I have is when I am simply playing with them. The imagination kids have is incredible and the “games” they come up with is fantastic. A simple empty cup can be my daughters imaginary pixie dust holder as we play fairies and “fly” around looking for treasures… a game of hide and seek, where I pretend for a while not to see them because they have “invisible” powers… building forts with pillows and blankets… mermaids “swimming” through secret caves under a table…
Silly activities can get my kids giggling and laughing like no toy can. I know that I probably don’t just play enough with my kids and I am going to make a real effort to have more silly time sans toys. I truly believe that we all could just play more. Ignore that the rules of the game usually don’t make sense and just go with flow and have fun keeping up with them.
It’s not just the kids that get a good laugh, I do too. And some days a good laugh can make a world of difference!
